Things to Do
There are so many interesting things to do and places to see just a few kilometers from Anchors Aweigh. So if the weather's playing up or you feel like a drive, try visiting some of these stunning places. Oh and by the way, you probably want to contact the establishments for details before you go, just to make sure they're open :-)
Enjoy a fun filled day out with the whole family at Jolly Rogers. This small fun park is located on Hibberdene's main beach and offers a super tube, mini golf, a restaurant, bar and incredible sea views. There is a jungle gym for the kids to play while the grown-ups have a relaxing meal. The restaurant has a bar and a huge outside area and the food and drinks are delectably affordable.
Believed to be the biggest reptile farm in Africa,Pure Venom has some of the most fearsome and venomous snakes on the planet. Take the kids to count all 70 teeth of a crocodile and stroke an iguana. Guided tours and snake demonstrations are on offer daily.
There are many little beaches between Scottburgh and Margate, that offer wonderful dolphin and whale watching opportunities. All within an easy 30-minute drive from Hibberdene with many quaint and inexpensive restaurants right on the beach or nearby. We've seen pods of dolphins and whales frolicking in the sea while enjoying a cold one at Jolly Rogers.
With hundreds of bird species, Vernon Crookes Nature Reserve is a twitchers delight where you can relax and just enjoy nature. The reserve is also home to the world’s largest earthworm and a threatened beetle species, while the changing seasons provide wild flower displays that attract those looking for solitude and rural beauty. There are 4 hiking trails, from an easy 1km stroll to the longest, at 4km. You might just stumble on an ancient gold mine hidden in the hills.
Enjoy light and crispy Belgian style waffles in tranquil surroundings. Established in 1957, this historical South Coast landmark is nestled in tranquil sub-tropical gardens on the edge of the Ramsgate Lagoon. Once you’ve tasted their unique waffles, finish your visit with a leisurely walk to the Gaze Gallery where you can view works by renowned Local and International artists. Bookings are essential in peak seasons.
One of the most beautiful places in the world, Oribi Gorge is only 1/2 hour drive from Anchor's Aweigh. Originally a farmhouse on a sugarcane plantation, Oribi offers beautiful accomodation, divine food, friendly hosts and extreme adventure.
This family bar and museum in Ramsgate is definitely not your usual hang-out. There's a Wild West Museum right next door to the bar, with lots of cowboy memorabilia and information about Indians and the Most Wanted criminals. Indian tepees surround the farm and the children can go on pony rides.
For the adults there’s regular music shows and a real Western bar, complete with an old piano. Huckleberry the donkey is a regular and drinks coke out the can and munches carrots to the delight of all patrons.
Attention all coffee lovers and connoisseurs, Beaver Creek Coffee Farm just outside Port Edward is not to be missed. Their freshly roasted speciality coffees are to die for. Single origin coffee is grown, harvested and roasted on the estate from Arabica beans and they also import beans from the world’s top coffee producing areas. Join the ‘crop to cup’ tour which runs daily at noon for a nominal fee and gives an overview of the flavour profiles of the world’s different coffee regions. Booking is essential.
